Geography
Below is a table listing the various geographical summary levels available through the SF3 downloader. The Geocomp column and sumlev column indicates the values of the geocomp attribute and the sumlev attribute that the downloader uses to determine which records to select from the desired SF3 table. For more information about geocomp and sumlev attributes, see the SF3 Technical Documentation.

Block NA NA

Census 2000 blocks. Census blocks are the smallest units of data tabulation. They cover the entire nation and do not cross census tracts or counties. They are generally bounded by visible features and legal boundaries. Their average size is about 100 people.

Note 1:Block level data is not currently available in SF3 data.
Note 2: Block numbers completely different from 1990.

Blockgroup 00 150 Census 2000 blockgroups. Blockgroups are groups of blocks sharing the same first digit. It is the smallest area for which sample data available. Blockgroups have an optimal size of 1,500 people but can range between 300 to 3,000.

Note: Blockgroups are only available for housing (H) tables and population (P) tables.

District
00 500 Congressional Districts as designated for the 106th Congress.
Parish
(County)
00 050 Parishes as of January 2000. (In Louisiana, counties are called parishes.)
Tract 00 140 Census 2000 tracts. For the first time for Census 2000, tracts cover the nation. Tracts have relatively homogenous population characteristics. Tracts have an optimal size of 4,000 people but can range between 1,000 and 8,000.
Zip Code Tabulation Area

00 851 Zip code tabulations areas (ZCTAs) are approximate area representations of USPS ZIP Code. They are based on Census 2000 blocks and were created to address difficulties in mapping USPS ZIP Codes. ZCTAs can represent 3 digit zip codes (ie, zipcodes with the same first 3 digits) or 5 digit zip codes.
