The CGM maps created by GeoMedia Web Map may be viewed with your standard browser if it has the ability to display standard CGM files. The browsers Internet Explorer and Netscape on any platform should be able to display the CGM files and use the hotspot and tooltip features. Likewise, most other browsers on any platform should be able to take advantage of the CGM files.

Atlas provides a Java applet for your web brower. The applet give users the ability to manipulate the map views with built-in commands and may query for attributes attached to individual features.


In order to display maps created by GeoMedia Web Map in the Active CGM format, you will need to be running under the following conditions.

On Windows machines, use IE version 4.01 or higher, Netscape 4.5 or higher, or a browser capable of running Java applets.
On Unix and Machintosh machines, use a browser capable of running Java applets.
You should set your browser security to allow for the downloading and execution of the applet.
Windows XP users: ensure that your firewall will allow .cgm files to be displayed.
Your maps will look best if your screen is set up to at least 800x600 pixel resolution or better.

Downloading the JMapView Java Applet


If your security settings allow for the downloading of Java applets, you may see a security warning form the first time you visit any map inside Atlas. (The image to the right shows an example of such a form.)

Click on the "Yes" button to proceed with downloading the Java applet. This applet is necessary to viewing the CGM files that Atlas uses to display its index maps.




There is very little you need to understand to get full use from the viewer. Each time you make a basic map request, rather than a database request, you are starting a new session. This session will remain invoked until you request a new set of graphics based on a new query.

Your maps will contain several types of graphics. There may be simple CGM graphics and text reflecting various types of feature on the map. These are essentially pictorial "backdrop" items. There may be click-able hot spots in the map. These may be lines, polygons, text or symbols that have been "activated" in some way. They are the reason that ActiveCGM is unique. They react to your cursor.

The map may be enclosed in a frame that has other links or commands in it (examples could be "Zoom In", "Pan Left", or preset zoom levels like "Close", "Neighborhood", "Street Map"). Clicking these will activate a command customized for the specific application. Look upon them as predefined scale levels.

The map may have special markers resulting from a query you may have made. (Example, 1234 Jameison Ave may deliver a map with a marker at the location.) These markers will remain in place as you move between zoom levels, or predefined scale levels. These markers will remain in place until you create a new session.

The maps will be delivered with a set of predefined functions. These functions accessible as menu items available by clicking the right button anywhere in the map.


Many of the maps will contain "hot spots". These features within the map will react to your passing the cursor over them by changing from your normal pointer (usually an arrow pointing up and to the left) to a hand with a pointing finger. They may also change color when the cursor is positioned over them. This tells you that the graphic element has some intelligence built in to it. Depending on the implementation, this can be manifest in several ways. Clicking on the feature will "activate" it, and perform a predefined function. In GeoMedia Web Map, this will usually mean retrieving attribute data about that feature. For example, if the item were a symbol for a transformer, you might get the details of that transformer that are stored in the database. If it were a parcel, you might get its assessed value, its address, and other information that the provider wishes to share with you.

Sometimes, you may find that clicking on an active feature will transfer you to another web page, or provide you with a list of optional actions to take.

KEY FEATURES (Highlighted hot spots)

GeoMedia Web Map can set a different color for selected features. So if your map results from clicking on the hyperlink for a specific feature, you may see a map with that feature in the center of the screen, and in a different color to all the other features of the same type. It will often also be an active feature (hot spot), and permit you to retrieve additional information about that feature by clicking on it.


The viewer module has several capabilities that are not evident in the normal browser user interface. If you click the right mouse button anywhere inside the map itself, you will be presented with a "pop-up" menu of commands. The standard commands are as follows and are activated by clicking the command with the LEFT mouse button.  Standard commands include:

Fit - Click this command to see all of the graphics that have been downloaded in this particular session.
Zoom Box - Click this command , then drag a box over the area you wish to zoom in to. To drag a box, click and hold down the left mouse button at the top left corner of your desired area, move to the bottom left corner, and release the mouse button.
Zoom In - Click this command to zoom in around the center of the map - a 2X zoom factor
Zoom Out - Click this command to zoom out around the center of the map - a 2X zoom factor
Magnify - Click this command to create a magnifier window. Then as you move your cursor over the map, a magnified view at your cursor position will be displayed in the magnifier. In Netscape Navigator, click on the "Close" button to remove the magnifier. In Internet Explorer, a single click the right button anywhere will remove it.
